Custom lasik surgery is appropriate for all ages and can allow you to participate in activities like snowboarding which require long distance clarity

Tired of the constant care associated with contact lenses? Are your glasses driving you crazy? If you’re tired of dealing with glasses and contact lenses, chances are you’ve considered LASIK surgery. When researching LASIK surgery, it can be hard to understand the difference between types of LASIK and the different technology involved. Here at Shanbom Eye Specialist, we perform all laser custom LASIK surgery to Detroit, Berkley, Royal Oak and the surrounding Michigan areas.

What Is All-Laser Custom LASIK?

All laser custom LASIK refers to LASIK surgery that is performed without the use of blades and is completely tailored to each patient’s eyes. There are two things that separate this procedure from traditional LASIK surgery.

The first is that instead of using a blade (called a microkeratome) to create the corneal flap on the eye, all laser LASIK implements the use of a femtosecond laser. The femtosecond laser creates a precise, durable corneal flap within seconds.

The second difference is the “custom” aspect of the procedure. Before your all laser custom procedure, your surgeon will take a detailed image of the surface of your eye, mapping out where adjustments need to be made for optimal results. This is done using wavefront technology.

The LASIK Procedure

All laser LASIK surgery can be explained as three simple steps.

The first step is a consultation.

During this time, your surgeon will create a detailed map of your cornea. This gives them information on exactly how to reshape the cornea. WaveLight® technology makes the surgery more precise and outcomes more predictable.

The second step is to create the corneal flap.

Your LASIK surgeon at Shanbom will use the femtosecond laser to create a thin, circular, hinged flap on the surface of the cornea. This flap will be peeled back to expose the inner layer of the cornea for treatment.

The third step is the actual treatment.

This is done using an excimer laser. The excimer laser is computer programmed with the map of your cornea and knows exactly where to treat. The excimer laser will remove microscopic amounts of corneal tissue in order to reshape the eye.

Custom lasik surgery is a simple and quick process

LASIK Technology

At Shanbom Eye Specialist, we are proud to offer the best LASIK technology on the market.

We use a combination of the Wavelight FS200 femtosecond laser and the WaveLight® EX500 excimer laser. This combination provides the fastest total refractive surgery in the US. The WaveLight® EX500 excimer laser uses PerfectPulse® Technology which allows our LASIK surgeons to do precise work at high speed.

The WaveLight® EX500 excimer laser emits a cool beam of ultraviolet light to precisely remove tiny amounts of corneal tissue. The excimer laser corrects myopia by flattening the cornea, hyperopia by steepening the cornea, and astigmatism by smoothing out any irregularities. This system uses a map of your unique corneal topography to make these corrections in the right place.
